Presa Oviachic - Presa General Alvaro Obregon
Presa Ovichic or Presa General Alvaro Obregon as it is also known, is one of Ciudad Obregons most visited tourist and recreational hotspots.
During the weekends and holiday seasons, thousands of Sonorense locals and international tourists take the 30-minute drive from Ciudad Obregon to do a variety of recreational and fun activities.
As you arrive at the main entrance to Presa Oviachic you are greeted by a huge monument that commemorates the construction and opening of the gigantic water structure which brings life to the Cajeme Community.
Family recreation
Located 300 meters from the entrance is a recreational area and lookout point providing the perfect panoramic view of gargantuan lake and its surrounding natural scenery. Here you will find ample free-parking facilities and a convenient parking lot for caravans too.
Camping
Throughout the perimeter of the Presa Oviachic you will find numerous nature trails that provide access to beautiful landscapes waiting to be explored by outdoor enthusiasts. The nature trails lead to many areas suitable to pitch a tent or two and set up camp, and if you are the adventurous type, you are free to explore further the terrain to discover other areas to camp.
Fishing
Over the years, fishing has become a mainstream sport on the lake, and every year there is an International Large Mouth Bass fishing tournament organised by “Anzuelo Fishing Club AC”, which sees hundreds of fishing fanatics from all over the world come to experience the excitement of competing for the best catch. This event is also considered to be one of only five of its kind in the world and its accompanied by trade stands, live music performances and various regional gastronomic food stalls, which makes it an exciting event not just for sports fishing aficionados, but also for everybody.
Water sports and Activities
Oviachic has become a very popular destination for lovers of water sports. Because of its vast size and calm waters the lake is preferred for water activities because it provides a vast open area where people can feel free to enjoy exhilarating thrills and adrenaline rushes in the a safe environment. You can often see a variety of sports activities including water and jet skiing sailing and diving taking place. There is a restaurant located of the lookout pier, which provides boat rentals for a reasonable price.
Children and Family Amusement Area
Located five minutes drive from Ovicahic’s main entrance; you will find the “Recreational Park Oviachic”. Here you have access to acres of wooded land that provides a luxuriant shade of towering cottonwoods. Many people visit the park with their friends and family because it provides a full day of relaxing fun for everybody. There is a small fee to enter the park ($20 pesos per car) which is open from 9am – 6pm, and when you arrive you will find an huge outdoor play area for children and young people, as well as many free to use grills for BBQ’s.
Getting to Presa Oviachic
It takes approximately 40 minutes travelling from Ciudad Obregon by car.
You follow the International Highway 15 North of Obregon for 10 kilometers until you come traffic light junction signposted ”Carretera a Rosario-Esperanza”. Here you turn right at the junction and follow the road for 15 Kilometers until you come to a right turn junction named “Carretera a Hornos-Buenavista”. Turn right here and follow the road for 11 Kilometers following the signs for Presa Oviachic.
